Investigative Research on Ainu Folklore Materials
Muraoka Tadashi was known for his investigative research and collection of Ainu folklore materials. Born into the family of the doctor that served Matsumae Domain, he developed an interest in Ainu culture and archaeology from an early age. He later became friends with Benkai Takojiro (Ikasipa), a powerful figure among the Otoshibe Ainu, among others.
Connection to Benkai Takojiro
Hearing of Benkai’s idea to present the bear cubs as a gift to celebrate the wedding of the Crown Prince, Muraoka Tadashi assisted him by arranging an audience with the Imperial family in Tokyo, as well as acting as a chaperone and translator. He later helped Benkai in various other ways, including personally recommending Benkai’s team for the search for bodies following the Mount Hakkoda Disaster, and receiving the visit of the Crown Prince to Onuma Park.
